Health minister finds evidence of mismanagement, broker syndicates during Barishal hospital visits
"Another major issue is the large amount of garbage and the unhealthy environment inside the hospital," he said.
During visits to three hospitals in Barishal today (11 May), Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain found evidence of mismanagement, broker syndicates and unhygienic conditions.
Speaking to reporters following the visits, the minister said, "I had heard many things about Barishal, so I came to see the situation directly. I visited the Barishal General Hospital, Shishu Hospital and Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital."
"At the General Hospital, I found one staff member absent and I closed him. I would not have done so, but he resorted to lying. He said he was coming despite not being present. I closed him for lying," he added.
"I spoke with patients. The biggest complaint I received was that although patients arrive at the hospital in the morning, doctors come late to the outpatient department. I am looking into the matter."
The minister further said, "The second and most alarming issue is that some brokers connected to local clinics come here and lure patients away from the hospital. I have instructed intelligence surveillance to identify and arrest these brokers, and if necessary, all brokers operating here will be arrested."
"Another major issue is the large amount of garbage and the unhealthy environment inside the hospital. I have directed the authorities to clean the hospital by tomorrow," he added.
Regarding the manpower shortage, the minister said, "We are going to recruit 100,000 personnel in the healthcare sector. The misrule of the past 17 years did not leave us with money or resources. Buildings were constructed, but there was no manpower and no doctors were appointed. These problems cannot be solved overnight. We are trying to resolve them."
