A Facebook status was posted from the verified profile of jailed Awami League leader Faruk Khan, where the former minister denounced party chief Sheikh Hasina and called for change in the party leadership.

The post went viral this afternoon (3 February) but within one hour of posting, the profile became inaccessible.

The screenshot of the post has now become viral.

The post read, "I have managed to come online after a lot of effort. The four walls of the prison make us stand in front of our own selves.

"I want to say a lot, but I cannot say everything now. I will say this much that I accepted Sheikh Hasina as leader, but today our party is in this situation because of her stubbornness.

"We should not return to any kind of politics without a change in the party leadership and a cleansing campaign at all levels. I don't want Sheikh Hasina's Awami League anymore, I want Bangabandhu's Awami League back. Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu."

Commenters on the post raised questions about how Faruk is using Facebook from prison.

The Business Standard could not independently verify if the post was made by Faruk himself from prison or not.

Some commenters were saying that the profile was probably hacked.

Faruk Khan was arrested in the early hours of 14 October from the CMH area in Dhaka. The police said the arrest was made in connection with several murder cases filed against Faruk in different police stations.

Meanwhile, prison authorities said it is not possible to operate Facebook from the prison.

"He [Faruk] is currently imprisoned at Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj. Since there is no opportunity for any prisoner to use mobile phones, it is not possible for Faruk Khan to operate a Facebook profile from there," reads a statement issued by the Department of Prisons.

"However, we are not aware whether the profile named 'Faruk Khan' is being operated by someone else or his relatives. The law enforcement agencies have been requested to investigate the matter and take necessary action."
