Air pollution has emerged as a serious threat to public health in Bangladesh. Emissions from vehicles, brick kilns, industrial facilities and waste burning are steadily deteriorating air quality nationwide, increasing health risks such as respiratory illnesses, particularly for children, the elderly and people with existing health conditions.
To address the challenge, the government has taken measures to identify and control major sources of air pollution. As part of these efforts, a decision has been taken to take firm action against waste burning, said a press release issued by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
Under the initiative, the government has started collecting precise information on locations where waste burning occurs. It believes that active participation by citizens is essential for the effective implementation of the programme.
To involve the public, the government has requested citizens to submit photographs of waste burning incidents if they observe any. Relevant photographs may be sent to climatechange2@moef.gov.bd.
Each submission must include the name of the photographer or sender, mobile phone number, the exact location and address, and the time of the incident.
According to the ministry, the best 10 photographs will be selected each month after verification, and appropriate rewards will be given to the selected contributors.
The government expects that active public participation in the initiative will play a significant role in controlling air pollution across the country.
