Govt lawyers in Cumilla instructed not to represent attackers of student movement, teen gang members

Government legal officials in Cumilla have been instructed not to represent individuals accused of attacking the anti-discrimination student movement or those associated with teen gangs.
The directive was issued in a formal notice signed by Cumilla Judge Court Government Pleader (GP) Md Tarek Abdullah and Public Prosecutor (PP) Md Kaimul Haque Rinku.
"All government legal officers and prosecutors of Cumilla district are hereby specially directed and requested not to handle any cases related to the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and teen gangs," the notice reads.
Meanwhile, Mohammad Sakib Hossain, convener of Student Against Movement in Cumilla, expressed concern over the wording of the directive, calling it ambiguous.
"The notice does not clearly specify whether lawyers are being asked not to represent the accused or the plaintiffs. We hope the authorities will provide a clarification through a revised or new notice," he said.
Speaking to the press, Cumilla District PP Rinku said, "I've come to know that some of our lawyers are representing the accused in court. While I have warned them verbally, many are defending the accused on the grounds of personal ties or kinship."
