Govt to bring change in Mongla Port's management within 6-month: Minister Rabiul
The minister says, there would be no disparity between Chattogram and Mongla ports in terms of government attention and investment
The government will bring about a comprehensive change in the management of Mongla Port within the next six months, Shipping Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam said today (21 February).
"Considering the importance of this port to the national economy and foreign trade, we will identify existing problems and discuss them with the prime minister. Development activities will then begin in line with his directives," he said while speaking to reporters during his first visit to Mongla Port after assuming office.
He added that it could have a significant impact on employment, connectivity and the overall economy of the region.
The minister expressed optimism that with limited but strategic improvements in facilities and services, Mongla Port could quickly emerge as a fully capable and efficient port similar to Chattogram Port.
Emphasising equitable development, he said there would be no disparity between Chattogram and Mongla ports in terms of government attention and investment, adding that Mongla Port's potential will be utilised fully.
Responding to a question about whether suspended or cancelled development agreements with neighbouring countries regarding Mongla Port would be revived, the minister said the government would review those agreements while safeguarding national interests.
"Any agreement that has caused losses to the country will be carefully reconsidered before any decision is made," he added.
