Government employees continue protests at Secretariat, demand repeal of Public Service Ordinance

Government employees at the Secretariat continued their protests today (17 June), demanding the repeal of the "Public Service (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025".
The demonstration, led by the Bangladesh Secretariat Officers and Employees Unity Forum - a coalition of various Secretariat-based staff organisations - resumed around 11am when employees gathered in front of Building 6 at the Secretariat's Badamtoli area. From there, they marched towards the new building of the Cabinet Division and held a rally beneath it.
Unity Forum Co-Chairmen Md Badiul Kabir and Md Nurul Islam, along with Co-General Secretary Md Nazrul Islam and other leaders, were present at the rally.
Employees began their demonstrations yesterday (16 June), the day after the Eid holidays ended, with similar processions and rallies at the Secretariat.
Speaking at today's gathering, employee leader Nazrul Islam said, "We've heard that a committee led by the law adviser is preparing to recommend amendments to the ordinance, but we will not accept that."
Another leader, Mujahidul Islam Selim, warned, "We're still being gentle with our approach, but if we're forced to act otherwise, there will be consequences."
Following the rally, the employees submitted a memorandum to the home affairs adviser.
On 25 May, the government issued the "Public Service (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025", which allows termination of employees for four types of disciplinary offences by issuing only a show-cause notice, without a formal departmental case. Employees have since been protesting, demanding the withdrawal of the ordinance.
