Giving money to women is better; men spend it, drink alcohol: Salehuddin
The adviser said poverty in the country is rising, partly because good projects are not implemented properly
Providing financial support to women yields better outcomes, as men tend to spend money irresponsibly, Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed said today (10 December).
"Women are enterprising and [financially] prudent. Giving money to women is better, they spend more on family welfare. They need to be developed as entrepreneurs. But if men keep money, they spend it, drink alcohol," he said while speaking as the chief guest at a seminar organised by the Social Development Foundation (SDF) at a hotel in the capital.
The adviser said poverty in the country is rising, partly because good projects are not implemented properly.
"There are weaknesses in the law, there is corruption, and the system is complex; all of this together creates problems," he added.
He also noted that becoming an entrepreneur without taking loans is more beneficial. "It is better to start a business on your own than to rely on loans," he said.
Pointing to rising urban property expansion, Salehuddin stressed the need for decentralisation.
"Cities are needed, but villages must be made more attractive and vibrant," he said.
Calling for a stronger role of the SDF, the adviser said the organisation must expand its beneficiaries and contribute more to social responsibility and human development.
