For the first time, Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) has taken a unique initiative to sell beef at a subsidised rate of Tk500 per kg for low-income residents ahead of Shab-e-Qadr.

On the 26th of Ramadan, beef will be sold at a subsidised price throughout the day at 11 designated spots across eight zones of the metropolitan area after slaughtering cows, Gazipur City Corporation Administrator and Dhaka Divisional Commissioner Sharaf Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury told The Business Standard.

"Many low-income people reside in Gazipur Metropolitan City. Due to the high market price of beef, they cannot afford to buy and consume it regularly. Considering their needs and ensuring they can enjoy beef on the occasion of Shab-e-Qadr, this initiative has been taken," he said.

He added that each low-income individual will be allowed to purchase 1 kg of beef at Tk500.

A total of 11 healthy cows, each weighing at least 400 kg, have already been procured.

The remaining cost will be subsidised by the city corporation to ensure affordability for the low-income population.
