Gono Odhikar Parishad urges EC not to invite Jatiyo Party, 14-party alliance members to dialogue
The party also called on the EC to take measures to prevent leaders and activists of the banned Awami League faction from contesting elections as independent candidates
The Gono Odhikar Parishad has requested the Election Commission (EC) not to include Jatiyo Party and members of the Awami League-led 14-party alliance in its upcoming dialogue with political parties.
The party also called on the EC to take measures to prevent leaders and activists of the banned Awami League faction from contesting elections as independent candidates.
The written request was submitted by the party's secretary-general, Rashed Khan, during a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin at the Election Commission Bhaban in Agargaon today (12 November).
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Rashed Khan said, "If anyone from the Awami League gets the opportunity to contest as an independent candidate, they will try to sabotage the elections."
He also warned that if these parties are invited to the EC dialogue under the guise of registration, the party may resort to protests.
The Election Commission is set to begin a series of dialogues with registered political parties from 13 November ahead of the 14th national parliamentary election.
The EC has previously announced that the general election will be held in the first half of February next year, with the schedule expected to be declared in early December.
The commission has already completed major preparations and held consultations with various stakeholders, including election experts, academics, women leaders, journalists, and representatives of civil society.
