The committee formed to probe how Holey Artisan cafe attack convict Rakibul Hasan Regan got the Islamic State (IS) cap has analysed video footage of prison and found that he had indeed brought it from jail.

A member of the committee, on condition of anonymity, told The Business Standard, "Three caps – two white and one black – were brought from the prison. The convicts carried them in their pockets. Prison guards frisked them and sensed the caps, but thought those were just prayer caps.

"The guards could not guess that the caps had some other significance. Also, the footage does not clearly show the IS emblem on the caps."

Mahbubul Alam, chief of the probe body, said, "The investigation is over. The report will be handed over to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner soon."

On November 30, the jail authorities claimed that Regan did not bring the IS cap from the prison to court.

"We are certain that there was no negligence on our side. The convict did not collect the IS cap from the prison," Deputy Inspector General (prison) Tipu Sultan said.

On November 29, Mahbubul Alam told reporters that they came to know during a primary investigation that the cap was brought from the prison. "Regan carried it in his pocket."

The Anti-Terrorism Tribunal on November 27 convicted seven accused, including Regan, and sentenced them to death over the gruesome Holey Artisan attack in Dhaka's Gulshan on July 1, 2016.
