To ensure they were not subjected to any harassment, police removed them from the spot.
Police have released five people, including a Dhaka University teacher, who were briefly detained after being stopped by locals while attempting to pay tribute at the demolished residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Dhanmondi 32 in the capital today (15 February).
Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Ramna Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Masud Alam confirmed the matter to The Business Standard around 7:30pm.
"No one was detained by police from Dhanmondi 32. When several individuals went there, locals detained them. To ensure they were not subjected to any harassment, police removed them from the spot," he said.
"They were later released at a safe distance," he added.
Earlier in the afternoon, Dhaka University teacher AKM Jamal Uddin and four others, including a woman, reportedly faced hostility from local residents when they went to pay tribute at the site. Police were later seen escorting them away from the area.
Earlier, Assistant Commissioner (AC) of DMP's Dhanmondi Zone Shah Mostafa Tarikuzzaman told The Business Standard that three individuals identifying themselves as members of Bangladesh Chhatra League had been detained and taken to a police station after locals allegedly assaulted them. Their identities were being verified, he said.
In a Facebook post earlier in the day, AKM Jamal Uddin announced that he would visit the demolished residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Dhanmondi 32 at 4pm to pay tribute and invited others to join him.
