First session of 13th parliament lively and successful: Home minister
More laws were passed with cross-party participation, he says
The first session of the 13th parliament was lively and one of the most successful in the country's history, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said at a press briefing.
He made the remarks at the Ministry of Home Affairs this afternoon (4 May) while responding to questions from journalists.
Replying to opposition claims that the session was unsuccessful, the minister said the first sitting was "live and vibrant" with active participation from both the government and opposition.
He said more laws were passed in this parliament than at any time in the past, adding that discussions were held in a cordial environment where both sides presented their positions.
"Mutual respect and a sense of cooperation were maintained," the minister said.
He added that on several key national issues, the government and opposition worked together, with joint committees formed and unified opinions presented for the public.
He said differences of opinion were normal in a democracy, noting that both the opposition and the government presented their respective positions.
"Such debate is the strength of democracy," he added.
Overall, he said the current parliament has set a positive example of dialogue, cooperation and democratic practice.
