Family alleges broker negligence after infant dies at Dhaka medical
The accused broker was briefly detained but later released following a settlement after the family declined an autopsy
A seven-month-old infant died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) amid allegations that a hospital broker removed the child's oxygen mask while attempting to transfer him to a private hospital for "better treatment".
The deceased child, identified as Minhaz, had been undergoing treatment at the hospital.
According to the family, the infant died in his father's arms shortly after the oxygen mask was removed during preparations to shift him to a private hospital in the capital.
Following the incident yesterday (12 May), the accused broker, identified as Enayet Karim, was detained by police members stationed at the hospital.
However, he was later released after the child's family declined to proceed with an autopsy and reached a settlement with the accused, hospital sources said.
Sources at the hospital said Enayet Karim was a temporarily suspended office assistant of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
When contacted, Shahbagh Police Station declined to comment on the matter.
The child's maternal uncle, Ripon, said Minhaz had long been suffering from kidney complications and was brought to Dhaka from Rangpur for advanced treatment.
Family members alleged that Enayet Karim approached them, promising to arrange a hospital bed and advised them to move the child to a private hospital.
According to the relatives, the infant's oxygen mask was removed during the transfer process, causing his condition to deteriorate rapidly due to a prolonged lack of oxygen.
Hospital-related sources also claimed that allegations of irregularities and fraud had previously been raised against Enayet Karim.
He had reportedly been temporarily suspended earlier over accusations of taking money in exchange for arranging certificates for people injured during the July Uprising.
