Export sector risks setback without eco-friendly industrialisation: Ahsan H Mansur
Green Certification not possible without proper waste management, solar energy use, and effective water management, BB Governor Ahsan H Mansur says
Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H Mansur has said the export sector will face a significant setback if industries fail to adopt eco-friendly practices and obtain Green Certification.
He made the remark today (3 December) at a two-day conference and workshop organised by the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) in the capital.
"Green Certification is not possible without proper waste management, solar energy use, and effective water management," Governor Ahsan H Mansur also said.
He said the existing distortion in the country's VAT structure remains a major obstacle for small entrepreneurs.
"Even if a small entrepreneur pays 7% or 10% VAT, they do not get that tax credit; as a result, integration and productivity are hindered," he said.
Addressing weaknesses in loan disbursement, Mansur said inefficiency in this area risks wasting the allocated Tk2,000 crore.
He stressed the need for loan repayments to replenish a revolving fund, warning that "otherwise the channel will close".
He also highlighted the importance of creating demand for products. "There will be no benefit in increasing supply if a market is not created. It is essential for every entrepreneur to have a separate profile, shopping card, and real-time information on the online platform," he said.
He added that using online platforms and systems such as PayPal to reach international markets is now essential.
Citing an example, he said, "Chinese products can be bought from America, so why can Bangladesh's Jamdani not be bought sitting abroad?"
Mansur said the potential of small industries is considerable and that, with proper policies, Bangladesh will be able to build a strong position in the international market.
