Ex-law minister Anisul shown arrested in murder case
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Hasan Shahadat passed the order today (25 February)
Former law minister Anisul Huq has been shown arrested in a murder case filed over the death of Nadimul Hasan Elem, 22, in Dhaka's Sutrapur during July movement.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Hasan Shahadat passed the order today (25 February) granting a police application to show him arrested in the case, confirmed Nizam Uddin Ahmed, investigating officer of the case.
Earlier, on 16 February, the investigation officer submitted an application to the court seeking an order to show Anisul Huq arrested in connection with the case.
The court set Wednesday (25 February) for the hearing in the presence of the accused.
The application states that investigators have found evidence during the probe suggesting that Anisul Huq was directly and indirectly involved in the incident.
"During the preliminary investigation of the case, evidence and witness statements have been found indicating Anisul Huq's involvement in the incident. Under such circumstances, it is essential to show him arrested in connection with this case," reads the application.
The application further alleges that Anisul Huq, along with other named and unnamed accused, ordered a crackdown involving indiscriminate violence to suppress a "complete shutdown" programme called by the anti-discrimination student movement, in the course of which victim Nadimul Hasan Elem was shot in the head and died on the spot on 19 July 2024 in front of Kabi Nazrul Government College in Sutrapur.
According to the case document, leaders and activists of different affiliated organisations of Awami League attacked the protesters on 19 July, 2024.
It also mentioned that the attackers opened fire targeting the protesters, in which Elem, a student of Sheikh Borhanuddin Post Graduate College, was shot in the left eye.
He was rushed to Mitford Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
Anisul Huq was initially arrested on 13 August 2024 from Sadarghat while allegedly attempting to flee by river and has remained in custody since.
