A former Chhatra Dal leader has succumbed to his injuries sustained in an attack reportedly by a local Jubo Dal leader over a loan dispute in Kalaroa of Satkhira.

The deceased has been identified as Shahriar Arefin Turan, former senior joint secretary general of Satkhira's Kushodanga union unit of Chhatra Dal, said Kalaroa Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shamsul Arefin.

Turan, son of the late Abdul Hamid, a resident of Kushodanga union's Dhangora village, breathed his last at his home at around 10:00am today (March 18).

Turan's paternal uncle, Abdur Rashid alleged that the former Chhatra Dal leader was attacked by Monirul Islam, general secretary of Jubo Dal's Ward-6 unit under Koralkata union.

Monirul, son of Nurul Islam of Kauria village, was a tenant at a shop owned by Turan.

Kalaroa OC Shamsul Arefin said, "The killer, Monirul Islam, was a tenant of the shop of the deceased Turan in Kazirhat Bazar. At one point in an argument over rent, he hit him on the head with a brick. He eventually died while undergoing treatment."

"A murder case has been filed against Monirul Islam and his father Nurul Islam at the police station. Efforts are underway to arrest the accused," he added.

According to Turan's unlce Abdur Rashid, on 12 February Turan asked Monirul to pay Tk20,000 he owed the Chhatra Dal leader.

"An altercation took place between the two and at one point, Monirul hit Turan on the head with two bricks, severely injuring him," said Rashid.

"Turan was taken to Satkhira to Khulna City Medical College and was recently brought home 10-12 days ago after undergoing surgery. He died this morning while undergoing treatment at home. A written complaint has been filed with the police station regarding the incident," he added.

Rashid also alleged that Monirul was being sheltered by some local BNP leaders.

However, Koralkata Union Jubo Dal's Convener Abdul Jabbar said, "I cannot say at this time whether the attacker is Monirul Islam, the general secretary of the ward Jubo Dal. I will tell you later after looking at the documents."
