The Economic Reporters Forum, an organisation of journalists covering the economy sector, has elected Doulot Akter Mala as its new president and re-elected Abul Kashem as its general secretary.

Mala is a special correspondent at English daily The Financial Express and Kashem is a special correspondent at English daily The Business Standard.

The duo were elected to their respective posts in the election for the 2025-26 term held at ERF's office in Purana Paltan of the capital on Friday (27 December). It also held its biennial general meeting on the day.

Senior journalist Hasan Hafeez, chief election commissioner of ERF elections, announced the results at night.

Mala bagged a total of 114 votes to secure her victory. Her nearest rival, The Daily Star's Senior Correspondent Refayet Ullah Mirdha, who is also the outgoing president, got 82 votes. 

Among other elected members, The Daily Nayadiganta's Ashraful Islam was elected vice-president by getting 101 votes. His closest rival, Kazi Mohammad Azizul Islam of Ekattor Television got 75 votes.

Meanwhile, Abul Kashem bagged 93 votes, securing his reelection to the post of general secretary. His closest rival Mizanur Rahman got 48 votes.

Apart from this, Manik Muntasir was elected co-general secretary and Md Aminul Islam has been elected as finance secretary. SK Shafayat Hossain was elected unopposed for the post of information technology and training secretary. ASM Moinul Haque, Kayes Mohammad Sohel, Md Zakir Hossain and Ibrahim Hossain Ovi have been elected as members.
