Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is safe; no damage due to quake: Official
No structural or internal damage was detected at the two-unit facility following the tremors.
The under-construction 2400MW Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) in Pabna remains entirely safe and undamaged following the strong earthquake that jolted Bangladesh this morning (21 November), according to officials at the Ministry of Science and Technology.
Bangladesh Meteorological Department said a 5.7-magnitude earthquake, with an epicentre near Narsingdi, had rattled the country from – leaving multiple dead, hundreds injured, and buildings damaged nationwide.
"RNPP is designed to absorb the earthquake shock from 8-9 on the Richter scale. Within this magnitude, the plant will remain safe," the ministry's Secretary Md Anwar Hossain told The Business Standard shortly after the earthquake.
He also said the plant is equipped with multiple layers of protection, adding, "There is also a very sophisticated safety system in place to safeguard the power plant from any natural or man-made disaster."
No structural or internal damage was detected at the two-unit facility following the tremors, confirmed the secretary.
The plant, he said, was "designed by ensuring fool-proof security in stopping any radiation leak keeping natural disaster in mind".
