Govt actively considering amending Adani Power contract: Energy minister
Minister Iqbal stated that the 2017 agreement was reviewed by a national committee which was formed during the tenure of the interim government
The government is actively considering amending the agreement with India's Adani Power (Jharkhand) Limited, Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood Tuku said today (2 April).
During a parliament session, Member of Parliament for the Chattogram-15 constituency Shahjahan Chowdhury inquired that reports in the media suggested the power purchase agreement signed with the Adani Group was unusually expensive compared to domestic and international markets, or contrary to national interests.
He asked whether any legal avenues remain open to re-examine or amend this contract through international courts or diplomatic discussions; and if so, what steps the government has taken so far to re-evaluate the deal.
In response, Minister Iqbal stated that the 2017 power purchase agreement was reviewed by a national committee, headed by a retired Justice of the Supreme Court, which was formed during the tenure of the interim government.
This committee included power and energy experts, legal experts, economists, and chartered accountants, and it obtained opinions from international contract law firms.
In its review, the national committee mentioned in its report that the agreement signed with Adani Power by the previous government led by Awami League was executed at an unusually high price compared to domestic and international markets.
"Based on the national committee's report, matters such as approaching an international arbitration court or amending the contract through discussions with Adani Power are under active consideration of the government," said the minister.
