Fuel shortage rumours spark long queues at Rajshahi filling stations

Rumours of a fuel shortage triggered a rush at filling stations across Rajshahi, with long queues of vehicles forming since last night (21 July), despite authorities assuring that fuel supplies remain normal.

Long queues of vehicles and motorcycles were seen at filling stations across the city after rumours spread on social media and by word of mouth.

On-site visits this morning (22 July) found long queues of motorcycles, private cars and microbuses continuing at filling stations. Many motorists were buying more fuel than usual, with some filling extra jerrycans and bottles, putting several times the normal pressure on filling stations.

Motorists said they rushed to filling stations after hearing claims of a fuel shortage, but acknowledged that rumours had driven the rush. They also said there was no actual fuel shortage at the stations.

The district administration has launched awareness campaigns at filling stations to discourage rumours and prevent panic buying.

Solaiman Kabir, manager of Afrin Filling Station, urged people not to pay heed to rumours.

"We should continue buying fuel as we normally do. There will be no problem. But if everyone starts stockpiling because of rumours, it will create an artificial shortage caused by the public themselves," he said.

Rajshahi Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Kazi Shahidul Islam assured residents that fuel supplies remain normal.

"There is no shortage of fuel. Supplies are normal. We urge people not to buy or stockpile fuel unnecessarily after being misled by rumours. The situation is under the district administration's monitoring, and necessary measures will be taken in coordination with the relevant authorities if required," he said.

The district administration and filling station operators have urged residents to remain calm and purchase fuel only as needed.
