Govt set to buy 3 lakh tonnes of diesel from 3 firms
Cabinet committee okays the direct purchase.
The government will purchase 3 lakh tonnes of diesel from three firms through direct procurement to meet urgent energy demand triggered by ongoing geopolitical instability.
The decision came at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs held today (8 April), where three proposals from the Energy and Mineral Resources Division were cleared.
According to a finance ministry notice, the diesel will be imported through direct international procurement.
The ministry gave in-principle approval to procure 100,000 tonnes each from YAR Energy AG, K & R International Trading Company, and M/s Sikder International. However, the source of the fuel and pricing details were not disclosed.
Officials said the selected suppliers are not enlisted with the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC).
The finance ministry noted that the move aims to ensure energy security amid volatile global conditions following the Iran war.
Separately, the committee approved a proposal to procure vaccines through Unicef under the Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI). The Health Services Division placed the proposal to ensure an uninterrupted supply of vaccines at the field level in the 2025–26 fiscal year.
The committee also approved two bridge projects under public-private partnership. These include a bridge over the Meghna River on the Shariatpur-Chandpur road, and the Bhola Bridge on the Barisal–Bhola road over the Kalabador and Tetulia rivers.
