Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) buyers in Rangpur are angry over the hike in the price per cylinder of the fuel. The price of LPG gas per cylinder has suddenly increased in the city to Tk800 from the earlier price of TK760.

Expressing anger at the increase, buyers complained that the demand for gas increased during the floods and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Now, the hike in LPG cylinder price will throw low and middle-income people into further misery.

Abida Sultana, a resident of Munsipara, said this sudden increase has caused inconvenience for buyers. "Due to the ongoing pandemic, business is not going well, but the LPG cylinder price continues to soar,"

Sultana, who bought a cylinder of gas on Tuesday afternoon, said the price was Tk760 even 10 days ago. Now it is TK800. She wants the government to control the LPG price. "Otherwise, ordinary people will suffer," she added.

Farhad Ali, a resident of the Guratipara area of the city, reiterated Sultana's call to the government for controlling the gas price.

Gas dealers in Rangpur blamed the price hike on the suppliers in Dhaka.

Rayhan Sharif, an LPG gas dealer for Rangpur metropolis, said the LPG gas price has not been increased from Rangpur. "The price was set from Dhaka. There is nothing we can do," he said.

He said, dealers now have to buy the gas cylinders at an increased price and sell at a limited profit.
