The government has fixed the prices of salt-treated raw cowhides at Tk60-65 per sq ft in Dhaka and Tk55-60 per sq ft outside the capital for the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha -- increasing the rate by Tk 5 compared to last year.

The price of goat (Khashi) hides has been set at Tk22-27 per sq ft across the country, while that of she-goat (Bakri) hides was fixed at Tk20-22 per sq ft.

The rates were announced by Commerce Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin during a press conference at the commerce ministry in Dhaka this afternoon (25 May).

The decisions were made during a meeting between the commerce ministry and traders.

Meanwhile, the government also set the minimum prices of salt-treated rawhides from small-sized cattle at Tk1,350 in Dhaka and Tk1,150 outside the capital.

However, the government did not clarify what qualifies as a "small-sized cow" in terms of weight or market value.

Eid brings no relief as exports slump, tariff pressures mount on tanners

Addressing today's briefing, Adviser Bashir said to prevent smuggling across the border, letters have been sent to the director general of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), the inspector general of police, and all deputy commissioners.

They have been instructed to enforce a transport ban on rawhides from Dhaka to other districts and vice versa for at least 15 days following Eid, he said. "The aim is to ensure proper rawhide management and maintain law and order."

Additionally, Bashir said, letters have also been sent to the ambassadors of China and Vietnam in Bangladesh, inviting them to import rawhides.

For overall security in animal transportation and effective rawhide management during Eid, uninterrupted service will be provided through the Bangladesh Police helpline — 999, he added.

Moreover, a special control cell will be set up at the Ministry of Commerce to monitor and manage the situation, said the adviser.

Last year, the price of salt-treated raw cowhide was fixed at Tk55-60 per sq ft in Dhaka and Tk50-55 outside the capital.

The price of goat (Khashi) hide was set at Tk20-25 per sq ft across the country and Tk18-20 for she-goat (Bakri) hide.

The minimum per-piece price for cowhide was Tk1,200 in Dhaka and Tk1,000 outside the capital. A small cowhide measuring 20 sq ft or a hide from a cow worth Tk1 lakh would fetch the minimum per-piece price under the new structure.
