RU students stage sit-in demanding permanent expel of two BCL men

Rajshahi University (RU) students have staged a sit-in, after blocking the institution's administrative building, demanding permanent suspension of two Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists.

They held the programme from 12.30pm to 1.30pm on Sunday as some BCL activists allegedly beat up one of their fellows at a dormitory.

To bring the situation under control, Proctor Professor Lutfor Rahman announced that both of the BCL men Humayun Kabir Nahid and Asif Lak had been suspended temporarily.

But the protesters have given a seven-day ultimatum demanding permanent suspension of them.

If they are not suspended permanently, the students declared to go for a strong protest.

Proctor Lutfor said, "To expel them permanently, we have to maintain some steps. We cannot expel them permanently, else. After receiving the probe report from the committee, we will decide on permanent expel."

Teachers of the university held a human chain in the campus under the banner of "Nipiron Birodhi Chhatra-Shikkhok Oikya Rajshahi University" to press home their nine-point demand including permanent suspension of the two BCL men.

On Friday midnight, two BCL activists Humayun Kabir Nahid and Asif Lak allegedly beat up Sohrab Hossain, a resident student of Shaheed Shamsujjoha Hall, claiming that he stole a laptop.

Sohrab, a student of the finance department is now undergoing treatment at the Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital with head and hands injuries.
