No point in keeping campuses closed, cancelling exams over Covid-19: Dr Jafrullah

There is no reason to keep educational institutions closed and cancel the examinations on the pretext of coronavirus, said Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder Dr Jafrullah Chowdhury.
The government can create an effective process like holding shorter exams to properly assess the qualifications of students, he opined.
Dr Jafrullah was speaking as the chief guest at a discussion titled "Auto Pass in Exams during Covid-19: Present and Future of Education" under the banner of Education Reform Initiative (ERI) at the National Press Club on Saturday.

"When every sector has been reopened following the Covid-induced shutdown, there is no point in keeping the educational institutions closed and cancelling the exams. This is nothing but a ploy to destroy the country's education system and the nation," he alleged.
Mahmudur Rahman Manna, convener of political party, Nagorik Oikya, was the special guest at the discussion chaired by ERI Chairman and former Education Minister, Dr ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milan. The event was moderated by Jahangir Alam Mintu, press adviser of the Gonoshasthaya Kendra.
The government is not reopening educational institutions because it is afraid of facing the student movement, opined Manna.
"What is the reason behind the closure of educational institutions when everything else is open? You must reopen them today or tomorrow, and then you will not be able to stop the students from taking to the streets," he warned.
Former State Minister for Land, Ruhul Quddus Dulu; former lawmakers, Ali Newaz Mahmud Khayyam and Md Selim Bhuiyan; Chairman of the Physics department, Dhaka University, Dr ABM Obayedul Islam also spoke on the occasion among others.
