JU students stage procession demanding ban on hall-based politics
The demonstration follows Dhaka University’s recent decision to ban student politics in its halls
A group of Jahangirnagar University (JU) students staged a protest march this evening (9 August), demanding the dissolution of hall committees of political parties and a ban on political activities inside residential halls.
The demonstration follows Dhaka University's recent decision to ban student politics in its halls.
The protest began at 7:30pm from Shahid Tajuddin Hall and Hall-21, with participants later joined by students from Shahid Rafiq Jabbar Hall, Kazi Nazrul Islam Hall, and Rabindranath Tagore Hall.
The procession gathered at Battala before circling the Shahid Minar, New Arts Faculty, Social Sciences Faculty, and women's halls.
The protesters chanted slogans such as "No politics in my hall," "Direct action against hall politics," "Direct action against ragging," and "One, two, three, four — student politics no more."
Yesterday (8 August), at around 11:30pm, students from various halls began chanting slogans demanding a ban on student politics, after the DU unit of Chhatra Dal, the BNP's student wing, announced convening committees for all dormitories earlier in the day.
Most of the students at last night's protest against the hall politics ban were general students who oppose any political presence in their halls.
Amid the protests, Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan reaffirmed that the decision taken on 17 July last year to keep residential halls free from student politics remains in effect.
"Student politics in the halls is prohibited according to the 'framework of 17 July 2024'," the vice-chancellor said in front of his residence at around 2:45am today (9 August).
