A video has surfaced on social media showing Sarba Mitra Chakma, a Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu) member, reportedly forcing local children to do ear-hold squats at the university's central playground on 6 January.
The university's Proctor, Associate Professor Saifuddin Ahmed, has sought an explanation from Sarba Mitra.
Some of the DU students have condemned the act, alleging that the student leader took the law into his own hands rather than involving the university administration to address any perceived misconduct by the children.
The video, which began circulating on social media this afternoon (25 January), shows approximately 30 teenagers and young men lined up in the southeast corner of the field, performing ear-hold squats.
In the footage, Sarba Mitra Chakma is seen standing before them holding a stick.

He confirmed that the incident took place at around 4:44pm on 6 January. The individuals were reportedly punished for entering the university grounds to play.
When contacted for comment by The Business Standard, Sarba Mitra did not respond to multiple phone calls.
The DU administration has taken notice of the footage.
Speaking on the matter, Proctor Saifuddin said, "I have seen the video recently. I have already spoken with the Director of the Physical Education Centre and have asked Sarba for an explanation.
"He must provide a justification for this incident," the proctor said.
