The name of the proposed new university, which would be formed by integrating seven government colleges in the capital, has been finalised as "Dhaka Central University."
The decision was made during a meeting held at the University Grants Commission (UGC) office in the capital's Agargaon today (16 March), reports Samakal.
A 32-member delegation of students from the colleges participated in the meeting.
After the meeting, UGC Secretary Fakhrul Islam confirmed the development, telling reporters that the name "Dhaka Central University" will now be sent to the Ministry of Education, and from there, it will go to the Advisory Council.
Following approval from the council and with the president's consent, an ordinance will be issued to officially establish the university, he said.
At a press briefing this afternoon, Chief Adviser's Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder also shared the development regarding Dhaka Central University.
Azad said an interim administrator will be nominated from the principals of the seven colleges.
The headquarters of the university for the time being will be selected based on which college's principal is going to be nominated as an interim administrator, he said.
The UGC has already interviewed the principals of the seven colleges, he added.
The seven colleges are Dhaka College, Eden Mohila College, Begum Badrunnesa Government Girls' College, Government Titumir College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College, and Government Bangla College.
These colleges collectively have about 200,000 students, with over 1,000 teachers, and admit around 21,500 students each session.
The seven colleges were affiliated with Dhaka University (DU) on 17 February 2017. The affiliation ended in January this year following weeks of protests by the students of these institutions.
They have been demanding the establishment of a separate university for the seven colleges. The interim government formed a special committee back in December following prolonged protests.
The committee members spent over three months conducting feasibility studies, visiting campuses, drafting a framework for an honourable separation, and holding meetings with teachers and students, among other tasks.
On 18 February, the UGC invited suggestions for the name of the proposed university.
