Chittagong University (CU) authorities have suspended Zoology Professor Mohammad Abdul Wahed Chowdhury for one year for making derogatory remarks on social media about the July 2024 mass uprising.
The authorities have also ordered the formation of an investigation committee to conduct further inquiry into the case. The suspension was approved at the university's 568th syndicate meeting last Friday, Vice-Chancellor Prof Mohammad Al-Forkan said today (7 September).
Prof Wahed was accused of posting derogatory remarks containing obscene language on his Facebook account on 7 and 20 June and 3 July.

The posts drew widespread criticism on campus. On 12 July, the Chittagong University Central Students' Union (Cucsu) submitted a memorandum to the vice-chancellor, demanding exemplary punishment.
The same day, the university formed a three-member probe committee headed by CU Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) Prof Mohammed Al-Amin. Then-acting Registrar Prof Mohammad Saiful Islam was named member secretary, while Assistant Proctor Md Kamrul Hossain was made a member.
Contacted, Prof Wahed said he is yet to receive any official letter on his suspension.
Prof Wahed joined the Zoology Department at CU as a lecturer in 2012, subsequently becoming an assistant professor in 2014, associate professor in 2021 and professor in 2026. He also served as an assistant proctor of the university from 2021 to 2023.
