DU admission fraud: Arrest warrant against 78, bail extended to 17

A Dhaka court on Wednesday issued arrest warrant against 78 people accused of involvement in question paper leak and fraud in Dhaka University admission tests.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sadbir Yasir Ahsan Chowdhury passed the order after taking into cognizance a charge-sheet submitted to the court against the accused.

The charge-sheet - accusing 125 people, including 87 DU students - was submitted on Sunday last to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court by Senior Assistant Superintendent of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Suman Kumar Das. Most of accused are reportedly absconding.
CID officials said they were looking for 90 more DU students who passed the university entry tests through cheating.
“A supplementary charge-sheet will be submitted after we verify their names and addresses,” a CID official said, seeking anonymity.
Earlier, the specialised wing of the Bangladesh Police arrested a gang of 47 fraudsters, including its mastermind Alip Kumar -- former assistant director of Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishtan (BKSP).
The CID, in this connection, also held three government officials and 21 DU students.
However, most of the suspects, including Alip, are now out on bail.
Among those involved in admission fraud, some are activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League, said sources in the CID.
In January last year, the DU authorities expelled 15 students over their involvement in leaking question papers and cheating in admission tests.
According to media reports and DU investigation, several unscrupulous invigilators and office assistants in exam centres used to provide the gang of fraudsters with question papers minutes before the exams.
In 2017, the same gang leaked question papers of DU’s Gha unit admission test from a printing press in the capital’s Indira Road.
A case was filed with Shahbagh police station in this connection in October 2017 under the Public Examinations Act and the Information and Communication Technology Act.
