Dhaka South clears more than 36,000 tonnes of waste after Eid-ul-Adha: Administrator
According to DSCC data, 14,814 tonnes of waste were removed on Eid day, followed by 8,977 tonnes on the second day and 12,295 tonnes on the third day
Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) removed 36,086 tonnes of sacrificial animal waste in three days from Eid-ul-Adha, exceeding its initial target, its administrator said today (31 May).
Speaking at a press briefing at Nagar Bhaban, Dhaka South Administrator Mohammad Abdus Salam said a total of 36,086 tonnes of waste had been dumped at the Matuail landfill from Eid day until midnight yesterday.
He said the initial target for waste removal this year was 33,942 tonnes.
According to DSCC data, 14,814 tonnes of waste were removed on Eid day, followed by 8,977 tonnes on the second day and 12,295 tonnes on the third day, he added.
A total of 13,453 workers were engaged in the operation. In addition, the corporation deployed 2,117 small and large vehicles, including 382 specialised vehicles and equipment, for waste transportation.
The Dhaka South administrator said 17,315 animals were sacrificed at its designated 357 locations over three days.
Ahead of Eid, the city corporation carried out awareness campaigns through newspaper notices, television advertisements, social media and ward-based microphone announcements.
"Dhaka South also distributed 46 tonnes of bleaching powder, 1,050 litres of Savlon and 140,000 biodegradable bags across its 75 wards," he added.
The city corporation also announced strict action against leaseholders of 11 temporary cattle markets for failing to fulfil their responsibilities regarding waste removal.
Abdus Salam further said Dhaka South had to clear waste from those markets on its own to prevent public suffering, which slightly affected overall operations.
He added that the security deposits of leaseholders who violated the conditions would be forfeited and that they will be blacklisted. The amount of security deposits for temporary cattle markets will also be significantly increased from next year.
Dhaka South said its monitoring teams will continue working in the field, and any complaints of unremoved waste will be addressed within one hour through the central control room.
