The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has demolished eight illegally constructed gates on various roads in Rupnagar Residential Area of the capital's Mirpur.

The gates were demolished during a drive by Dhaka North executive magistrates Md Ziaur Rahman and Md Shahidul Islam.

In the drive, a total of eight gates and more than a hundred illegal shops and makeshift stalls on the sidewalks and roads were evicted, freeing up about a kilometre of road and sidewalks, Ziaur Rahman told reporters at a briefing after the drive.

The owners of a furniture shop and a food shop were fined Tk3,000 each, for a total of Tk6,000, for operating shops encroaching on the sidewalk, he said.

"The Dhaka North's regular campaign to remove any illegal structures on roads and sidewalks to ensure smooth movement of the people is ongoing. In view of the demands of the local people, we have demolished the illegally constructed gates on the roads to restore their ease of movement.

"These gates were installed without permission, which has caused suffering to the people," he added.
