Dhaka Court declares Ishraque Hossain mayor of Dhaka South
Ishraque, son of former Dhaka mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka, said it depends on the party whether he will take the mayor post

A court has declared former mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka's son, BNP leader Ishraque Hossain, as the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) by rejecting the results of the elections held on 1 February 2020.
Dhaka's First Joint District Judge Md Nurul Islam, who is in charge of the Election Tribunal, announced the verdict today (March 27).
Ishraque's lawyer Rafiqul Islam confirmed this information to the media.
BNP-backed mayoral candidate Ishraque Hossain had filed a case with the Election Tribunal seeking the cancellation of the results of the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) elections held on 1 February 2020, alleging vote rigging.
In the verdict, the government's gazette for former mayor Sheikh Fazle Nur Taposh with the boat symbol was cancelled, declaring Ishraque Hossain, who contested with the paddy sheaf symbol, as the mayor.
Ishraque Hossain was present in the court during the verdict.
In the case filed by Ishraque, a total of eight people, including the then chief election commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda, returning officer Md Abdul Baten and former South City Corporation mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Nur Taposh were named as defendants.
Another lawyer for Ishraque, Taherul Islam Touhid, told reporters, "We filed a case seeking the cancellation of the election on allegations of irregularities, corruption and inadmissibility. We applied to declare him the mayor. The court ruled in our favour today."
After the vote, Ishraque Hossain told reporters that whether he will take charge of the mayor's post is a party matter, and he will take the oath as mayor only if he gets the party's approval.
Earlier on 1 October 2024, a Chattogram court declared BNP leader and mayoral candidate Dr Shahadat Hossain mayor-elect of the Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) after he filed a lawsuit seeking cancellation of the election results over "vote rigging."
The court of Electoral Tribunal and the Joint District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Khairul Amin issued the verdict.
Dr Shahadat filed the lawsuit against the Election Commission and nine others back on 24 February 2021 during the CCC election.
In the lawsuit, he made allegations of election rigging and sought to cancel the results.
