'Noakhali people is even on the moon': Deputy speaker quips as MP seeks Noakhali Division

MP for the Noakhali-1 constituency Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon has sought divisional status and major infrastructure projects for Noakhali, while Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal quipped that "Noakhali people are even on the moon," referring to the district's famously far-reaching community.

Khokon raised the demands during yesterday (2 September) Jatiya Sangsad session, saying, "People from Noakhali live across every district of Bangladesh and in countries around the world. Making Noakhali a division has long been a demand of its people. Given its vast area, two or three more districts could also be carved out of Noakhali if necessary."

At the end of his speech, Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal remarked on the widespread presence of Noakhali people.

"You said Noakhali people are everywhere in Bangladesh. Where are they not found? People often joke that even if you go to the moon, you will find someone from Noakhali there. That's how widespread their presence is," the deputy speaker said.

Calling Noakhali an ancient and historically significant district, Khokon said its people are hardworking, patient and able to adapt to any situation.

The MP has called for a seaport, airport and medical university to be established in Noakhali.

"A seaport in Noakhali would reduce the country's dependence on and risks associated with its existing seaports", Khokon said.

Khokon also said Noakhali people's contribution to the economy through business, commerce and banking, noting that they are present across Bangladesh and around 70–80 lakh live abroad.

The deputy speaker then thanked Khokon and moved on to the next of the parliamentary session.
