Death row prisoner dies at CMCH

A death row prisoner died yesterday night (21 March) while undergoing treatment at Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH).
According to prison authorities, the prisoner Yakub Ali Babul, 45, had been at the Chattogram Central Jail since he was arrested.
Confirming the matter to The Business Standard, Jailer Masud Hasan Jewel said Babul had been sentenced to death in a murder case. Due to his deteriorating health, he has been visiting the hospital for treatment over the past few months.
"On 16 March, Babul was admitted to the hospital with severe abdominal pain. Despite receiving treatment, he passed away around 10pm on Thursday. Hospital officials reported that his death was caused by various infection-related complications," he added.
On 21 October 2024, Babul was arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in connection with the murder of an expatriate named Nesar Ahmed Tota.
The police recovered Tota's body on 2 November 2003, at the foothills of South Rangamatia in Fatikchhari. Following the incident, Tota's wife filed a murder case against Babul and nine others.
On 8 March 2021, a Chattogram court sentenced nine of the accused, including Babul, to death.
