The Daily Star publishes a correction on arson remarks by Mahfuz Anam
The Daily Star Editor, Mahfuz Anam, acknowledged that there had been previous cases of arson attacks on media offices in the country.
The Daily Star published a correction note yesterday (23 December), in which its Editor Mahfuz Anam admitted that during a BNP-organised meeting with editors and senior journalists on 21 December, he referred to the arson attacks on Prothom Alo and The Daily Star as the first such incident in Bangladesh.
Later, he acknowledged that there had been previous cases of arson attacks on media offices in the country, although those incidents did not create such severe threats to life and property.
Mahfuz Anam expressed sincere regret for his error and stated that this correction will be attached to their online report as well.
Earlier, on 21 December, Mahfuz Anam had stated that in Bangladesh's 53-year history, no media office had ever been set on fire before, and this was the first time such attacks occurred at Prothom Alo and The Daily Star. He questioned why this happened and what crime the media committed to become targets of such attacks.
