A mother and child pair of capped langurs and a Chinese pangolin were rescued from a warehouse during a drive at the capital's Wari yesterday (27 May).

The Wildlife Crime Control Unit of the Forest Department rescued them during an operation based on a tip-off.

"We raided a building in the Dholaikhal area of Wari around 7pm yesterday and found three animals in a locked room on the 5th floor," Asim Mallick, an inspector of the WCCU told The Business Standard.

Speaking to the landlord's wife, Fahmida Akhter, Asim said they found out that the room on the 5th floor was rented by a Jewel on 1 May. He left home 2-3 days ago.

"We have yet to locate the person who rented that room."

Asim Mallick further said, "We came to know that Jewel has been involved in wildlife trafficking since before.

"We called a number belonging to a Jewel but he denied renting the room and holding three animals. We are verifying that phone number with the Criminal Investigation Department and trying to find out if he was the one staying in that room."

The inspector also said a case will be filed after collecting more information.

"We are planning to set the animals free in Sylhet," he added.
