The suspected leader of a top criminal gang was killed in a reported gunfight with members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab-2) at Basila Garden City in Mohammadpur area early Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Tanvir Ahmed Anik, 36, leader of a criminal gang named Seven Star Group, Lt Col Ashique Billah, commanding officer of RAB-2, told The Business Standard.

Anik was wanted in at least seven murder cases, the RAB official said.

Acting on a tip-off, the elite force members set up a check-post in the area to catch fugitive Anik, Lt Col Ashique said.

But sensing the presence of law enforcers, Anik along with his cohorts opened fire on the RAB personnel, forcing them to retaliate that triggered a gunfight, he added.

At one stage, Anik sustained bullet injuries. Later RAB members rushed him to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.

Two RAB members were also injured during the gunfight.

Two firearms with bullets and some locally-made sharp weapons were recovered from the spot.

Seven Star Group is involved with extortion and murder in Agargaon and Mohammadpur areas, the RAB official said.
