The gang allegedly posed as customers before stealing the money bag from in front of the cash counter.
A gang of thieves allegedly stole Tk7.8 lakh from a customer inside Sonali Bank's Brahmanbaria Corporate Branch this morning (24 August), prompting concern among other customers.
The customer had gone to the branch around 11am to deposit the money. He placed the bag containing the cash in front of the cash counter and sat at a nearby table to fill out a deposit slip, according to witnesses and bank officials.
While he was filling out the slip, one of the gang members, posing as a customer, allegedly picked up the bag and left the branch. Several other members of the gang had also entered the bank posing as customers, they said.
Police later visited the branch after being informed of the incident.
Md Shariful Haque, manager of Sonali Bank's Brahmanbaria Corporate Branch, said the customer had left the money bag unattended in front of the cash counter while filling out the deposit slip.
"As the customer was not keeping an eye on the money, the thieves took the bag and left the bank," he said, adding that the incident occurred due to the customer's negligence.
Police are examining CCTV footage from the branch to identify the members of the gang, the bank manager said.
