The police have detained three members of the banned outfit Neo-Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (Neo-JMB) who were plotting to overthrow the government and establish Islami Khilafat in the country.

The three men – Md Abdullah, 24, Safikul Islam, 38, and Mostafa Hossain Arif, 25 – were held in the capital's Gabtoli area on Wednesday.

They all are from Chapainawabganj.

Acting on a tip-off, the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police took position at Gabtoli bus terminal and detained the three men around 8:15pm, according to Darus Salam police.

The detainees planned to establish an organisation in Bangladesh named "Khilafate Hind" with the coordination of militants in India and Bangladesh. They were also collecting new members for the outfit.

During primary interrogation, the detainees confessed that they are the members of old JMB and were trained by Sohel Mahfuz, an accused in the Holey Artisan attack case.

They usually communicate using apps and secret texts with other members of the outfit.

Police filed a case against them under the anti-terrorism act on Wednesday night.

The detainees also have involvement with the JMB members arrested in India in June this year. They fled to Bangladesh after their arrest.
