Three held over attempted abduction of woman in Moulvibazar's Kamalganj
Police have arrested three men over an attempted abduction of a woman using a private car in Moulvibazar's Kamalganj upazila and seized the vehicle used in the incident.
Confirming the matter, Officer-in-Charge Md Abdul Awal said, the suspects were arrested from different areas of Sylhet yesterday (10 March), police said today (11 March).
The arrestees are Md Zakir Mia, 26, son of Motchir Ali from Sripur (Nasirabad) village in Kulaura upazila; Md Kawshar Ahmed, 34, son of Abdur Rahman from Saiyarpur area of Moulvibazar Sadar upazila; and Jasim Mia, 36, son of Nur Mia from Gulbagh (Berirchar) area of the same upazila.
The incident took place on 8 March, and CCTV footage of the attempted abduction later spread online.
According to police and the victim's account, the woman from South Baligaon village under Ward No. 5 union of Kamalganj was waiting at Bottola Bazar around 6:30am to travel to Srimangal for work.
At that time, a white private car approached her and offered to take her to Srimangal. Although she declined, the vehicle continued to move around the area and later followed her.
At one stage, a man inside the car tried to forcibly pull her into the vehicle by covering her mouth. The woman managed to escape after a struggle.
Following the complaint, a case was filed with Kamalganj Police Station under Sections 7/30 of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, 2000.
After the investigation, the police conducted raids in several areas of Sylhet city and arrested the three suspects. Based on information provided by the arrestees, the private car used in the attempted abduction was recovered from inside the Agra Community Centre in the Sobhanighat area.
OC said the suspects were detained during drives in areas including Bandar Bazar and Sobhanighat in Sylhet.
Legal action has been taken against the accused, and the investigation into the case is ongoing, he added.
