Tejgaon College student succumbs to injuries 4 days after dormitory clash
A student has succumbed to his injuries after receiving treatment for four days following a clash reportedly between students and outsiders at the Tejgaon College dormitory in the capital.
The deceased, Sakibul Hasan Rana, 18, was a second-year student of the Higher Secondary Science Division at the institution.
He died on Wednesday (10 December) afternoon while undergoing treatment at Prashanti Hospital Limited in Malibagh, Dhaka. His body, however, was taken to his hometown in Sreepur, Gazipur, without an autopsy.
His family did not file any complaint with the police.
Later on Thursday (10 December), the hall superintendent of Tejgaon College dormitory Md Jahirul Islam filed a murder case at Dhaka Metropolitan Police's (DMP) Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
Confirming the matter, the station's Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Monirul Islam Monir told The Business Standard that the student's body was taken to Sreepur without notifying the police after his death.
"We are contacting Sreepur Police Station and the Gazipur police to bring his body back. But the family is not handing it over. The student's father lives in Malaysia. So the family said they will decide about the case once he arrives," he added.
He further stated that no case had been filed in the four days after the clash.
"We repeatedly asked the college principal and the hall superintendent to file a case. Today [Thursday], the hall superintendent was called in, and a case regarding the clash was filed. Later, we heard that the student had died and the family had taken the body away."
Earlier on the night of 6 December, a clash broke out reportedly involving a group of Tejgaon College students and a group of local outsiders.
During the incident, Sakibul Hasan Rana sustained a serious head injury and was later admitted to Prashanti Hospital Limited.
In the case statement, the college authorities alleged that a dispute over smoking inside the dormitory led to the clash between outsiders and a group of resident students.
