Stepfather 'kills' three-month-old baby for crying
Locals later detained the man, identified as Apurba, and handed him over to police
A three-month-old baby boy was killed in Mirpur, Dhaka, after his stepfather allegedly suffocated the infant by covering his mouth with his hand for crying.
The incident took place today (17 April) at a rented house in the Bardhanbari area of Mirpur, confirmed Darus Salam Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) SM Zakaria.
Locals later detained the man, identified as Apurba, and handed him over to police.
OC Zakaria told The Business Standard that the child's biological father is currently in jail in a drug case, while the child's mother, Raziya Khatun, married Apurba a week ago.
Early in the morning, as the baby started crying, Apurba became angry and reportedly warned his wife that he would kill the child if the crying did not stop.
When the baby continued crying, Apurba allegedly covered the child's mouth with his hand, causing the infant to lose consciousness and die.
Hearing the mother's screams, neighbours rushed to the scene, detained Apurba, and informed the police.
The OC added that the child's mother filed a murder case against Apurba at Darus Salam Police Station. He has since been arrested in connection with the case and sent to court.
After a post-mortem examination, the body was handed over to the family.
