A scrap trader was hacked to death by unidentified assailants in Dhaka's Kadamtali area last night (6 December).
The victim, identified as Shahabuddin, 40, was attacked around 10pm on Adarsha Road in the Kudar Bazar area of Kadamtali. He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in a critical condition, where doctors declared him dead at around 11:30pm.
Speaking at the hospital, the victim's elder brother, Mahiuddin, said Shahabuddin lived in the Kadamtali-Jatrabari area and was involved in the scrap business.
"We came to know at night that miscreants had hacked my brother Shahabuddin with sharp weapons in the Kudar Bazar area of Kadamtali. When we reached the spot, we found him lying in a pool of blood," he said. "Although he was taken to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital immediately, doctors pronounced him dead after examination."
Mahiuddin said the family was still unaware of who carried out the attack or the motive behind it. "We will know more details once we visit the scene," he added.
Confirming the death, Inspector Md Faruk, in charge of the police outpost at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said the victim had multiple injuries caused by sharp weapons.
"The body has been kept at the hospital morgue for autopsy," he said, adding that Kadamtali police had been informed and an investigation into the incident was underway.
