Police have arrested the prime accused in the murder of two assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs) in Kumarkhali of Kushtia.

The accused, Yarul Sheikh, 40, was arrested from his residence this afternoon (10 March) during a secret operation, said Kumarkhali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Solaiman Sheikh.

According to police sources, on 28 October last year, ASI Sadrul Alam and ASI Mukul Hossain of Kumarkhali Police Station went missing after being attacked by miscreants from the Ber Kaloa area while attempting to arrest a suspect. The officers fell into the Padma River from a boat during the attack.

The following day, fire service personnel recovered Sadrul Alam's body two kilometres from the crime scene. A day later, Mukul Hossain's body was found in the Nazirganj area of Sujanagar upazila in Pabna.

Following the murders, Kumarkhali Police Station SI Nazrul Islam filed a case, accusing eight individuals, including Yarul Sheikh, of attacking and murdering the police officers on duty.

Additionally, Chanowar Hossain Selim, a member of Kaya Union Parishad's Ward-5, who was present during the operation, filed a separate case naming 37 people as accused.

Both cases also list 20-25 unidentified individuals.

OC Md Solaiman Sheikh said Yarul is the prime accused in the warrants related to the policemen murder cases.

Besides these cases, Yarul also faces five other charges, including allegations of sabotage.

The investigation is currently being handled by the Naval Police, the OC added.
