Post-poll violence: Independent candidate’s supporter beaten to death in Munshiganj
According to locals, the incident occurred when supporters of the “sheaf of paddy” symbol went to the victim's house and began verbally abusing him.
A supporter of an independent candidate was beaten to death in post-election violence in Munshiganj today (February 13).
The deceased, Md Jasim Nayeb, 30, was a supporter of independent candidate Md Mohiuddin in the Munshiganj-3 constituency.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar–Gajaria Circle) Mohammad Billal Hossen told The Business Standard that police are aware of the matter and are looking into it.
According to locals, the incident occurred this afternoon in Char Abdullah village under Adhara union of Sadar upazila, when supporters of the "sheaf of paddy" symbol went to Jasim's house and verbally abused him.
At one stage, they beat him, leaving him critically injured.
Family members rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he died around 7:30pm while undergoing treatment.
The victim's elder brother, Md Mashiur Rahman, alleged, "Nearly 200 supporters of the 'sheaf of paddy' symbol, led by Sakib, son of Dr Nasir, came to our house and abused my brother."
"At one stage, they beat him mercilessly. When his condition worsened after the attack, he was taken to Dhaka, but he could not be saved," Mashiur added.
