A member of Union Parishad and Upazila Awami League leader was gunned down by miscreants in Hatiya's Charashwar union early Thursday.

The deceased, 48-year-old Rabindra Chandra Das, was the son of Swatish Chandra Das of Ward-3 of Charashwar union.

The incident took place in front of the house of UP Chairman Abdul Halim Azad near Khaser Hat Government Primary School where he was shot and hacked to death allegedly over the factional clash and previous enmity.

According to local sources, a group of assailants attacked Rabindra Chandra when he was returning home on a motorcycle with Upazila Sramik League President Al Amin around 2am. Al Amin, who was riding on the back of the motorcycle, managed to run away but the attackers managed to catch Rabindra.

Later, they shot him and later hacked him indiscriminately, leaving dead on the spot.

On information, a team of police recovered Rabindra's body.

The eyewitness, Al Amin, claimed that as soon as they reached near Chairman Azad's home, his son Omi, nephew Sohail, and few others opened fire targeting their motorcycle.

Rashed Uddin, UP member of Charshwar Ward no 7, said, "Since Abdul Halim Azad was elected as a chairman, his relationship with us, including the Rabindra, deteriorated due to his arbitrariness. Eleven UP members signed a no-confidence petition against him. Following that he had been giving us death threats. "

Meanwhile, Chairman Abdul Halim Azad denied the allegations against him.

Hatiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abul Khair said the matter is being investigated and necessary action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
