A 39-year-old man was stabbed to death in the Lalbagh area of Dhaka in the early hours of Wednesday (1 January).

The deceased has been identified as Md Mahbub Alam, son of Abul Hossain, from Char Maguria village in Madaripur sadar upazila.

Abdus Selim Mia, sub-inspector (SI) of Lalbagh Police Station, said around 2am two teenagers reported finding a body in a bloody state Jagannath Shaha Road.

"The body was later sent to the morgue for an autopsy on Wednesday morning after completing the due procedures."

The SI also confirmed that an investigation is underway.

The deceased's maternal uncle, Alauddin, said that he had left home to celebrate New Year's Eve.

Around 5am, he received news that his nephew had been stabbed to death by unidentified people.

Mahbub Alam was living with his family in a rented house in the Lalbagh Shaheednagar area. He was a battery-run auto-rickshaw driver.
