Man shot dead in Dhaka's New Market area
Police suspect the deceased is Khandaker Naim Ahmed alias Titon, a top criminal from Hazaribagh.
A man was shot dead by unidentified assailants at the New Market area of the capital tonight (28 April).
The incident took place around 8pm in front of Shahnewaz Hostel of University of Dhaka, located behind the New Market area.
Confirming the matter, New Market Police Station inspector (Investigation) Md Anwar Hossain Khan said the assailants opened fire on the man under a banyan tree before fleeing the scene.
The victim's identity could not be immediately confirmed. The body has been kept at the morgue of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
"The victim was shot by unknown individuals who escaped immediately. Police are at the scene, and further details will be provided after investigation," the police official said.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (Ramna division) Md Masud Alam told The Business Standard that two assailants arrived on a motorcycle and fired multiple shots at the man. Passersby later took him to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead, he added.
Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost, said the victim had bullet wounds on his forehead, hands and other parts of his body.
While visiting the scene later in the night, SN Md Nazrul Islam, DMP additional commissioner (Crime and Operations), told reporters, "We suspect the deceased is Khandaker Naim Ahmed alias Titon, a top criminal from Hazaribagh."
"He had been in prison for a long time. After 5 August 2024, he was released on bail. Since then, he had been absconding," Nazrul said.
He added, "We believe he was shot dead by associates of his rivals in the underworld."
