Man beaten to death by elder brother in Lakshmipur over Tk5 electricity bill dispute, family claims
A man was allegedly beaten to death last night by his elder brother in Ramganj upazila in Lakshmipur, following a dispute over paying Tk5 less in an electricity bill, according to the deceased's wife.
The deceased, Alamgir Hossain, 45, an expatriate based in Abu Dhabi, had returned home on leave on 1 February.
The incident occurred around 8pm in the Uttar Badarpur area of Karpada Union in the upazila, confirmed Ramganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Firoz Uddin Chowdhury.
Police recovered the body and sent it to Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy, the OC said.
He added that an investigation is underway and that necessary legal action will be taken against those involved.
According to the victim's wife, Sabina Yasmin, a verbal altercation took place earlier in the evening between Alamgir and his elder brother, Khorshed Alam, over the Tk5 shortfall in the electricity bill. At the time, Alamgir was at home and had not been involved in any dispute.
However, after iftar, when he went to a local shop for tea, Khorshed allegedly launched a sudden attack and beat him severely.
At one stage, Alamgir was critically injured and left at the scene while the accused fled.
Locals later rescued him and took him to Ramganj Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
The victim's family has demanded the swift arrest and exemplary punishment of those responsible.
